UNIT 5  THE  UNIVERSE
The Universe is everything we can touch, feel, sense, measure or detect. It includes living things, planets, stars, galaxies, dust clouds, light, and even time.
The Universe contains billions of galaxies, each containing millions or billions of stars.

The Universe consits of all the celestial bodies tn the galaxies and intergalactic space:
  • stars
  • constellations
  • galaxies
STARS
Stars are giant balls of gas in space that shine through the darkness. The Sun is an average star that Earth orbits.
CONSTELLATIONS

Constellations are formed of bright stars which appear close to each other on the sky, but are really far apart in space.

GALAXIES
Edwin Hubble studied the "spiral nebulae" and found that they were composed of stars. These nebulae were not nebulae at all, but other communities of billions of stars held together by gravity - galaxies! Suddenly, our universe was much bigger. We realized that our Galaxy was just one of many billions of galaxies in the universe.

The Milky Way galaxy is the spiral galaxy we call home, as do roughly 100 billion other stars. It looks very much like other spiral galaxies when viewed from above. There are spiral arms and a bright central part. The Sun is far from the center of the Galaxy, halfway to the edge of the Galaxy along the Orion spiral arm.
